🌿 Devotional: Do you want Happiness or Joy?

Happiness and joy often get confused, but the Bible draws a clear line between the two.

Happiness is an emotion. It rises and falls with circumstances.
A good day, a compliment, a blessing, extra money, or a peaceful moment can make you happy, but when those things disappear, happiness often disappears with them. Happiness is “situational.”

Joy, however, is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). It does not shift with situations.
It is rooted in God, not in our surroundings. It is steady and strong because God is.

Happiness depends on what happens to you. Joy depends on what God is doing in you. Happiness changes with the weather of life. Joy holds firm in the storms of life.

Jesus never promised that we would always be happy, but He did promise that we could have His joy, and that this joy would remain, strengthen, and sustain us (John 15:11).

Joy is:

  • Hope when life hurts

  • Peace when nothing makes sense

  • Strength when you feel weak

  • Confidence when circumstances are shaky

  • A reminder that God is in control even when you are not

Joy says, “God is good,” even when life is saying the opposite.
The world can’t give it, and the world can’t take it away (John 16:22)!

Tell me, which do you choose, friend, happiness? Or Joy?

Speak over yourself:
“Lord, restore to me the joy of Your salvation.” (Psalm 51:12)

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of true joy. Joy that is steady, unshakable, and rooted in You. Teach me to stop depending on temporary happiness and to find my strength in Your presence. Fill my heart with a joy that remains even in difficult times. Your Word says that your joy is my strength. Help me trust that You are working, even when I cannot see it. Restore my joy, renew my spirit, and draw me closer to You each day. I receive the strength that your joy provides. In Jesus’ name, amen.
